If there's a magical time to explore the alpine gems of Lake Braies and Lake Carezza, it's during winter, when these natural wonders are transformed into fairytale settings. Then add the festive atmosphere of the Christmas markets, and you have an unforgettable experience ✨ Find out what to visit in Trentino in winter.
1. Lake Braies: a winter fairy tale
Lake Braies, with its crystal clear waters surrounded by the towering Dolomites, becomes a vision of winter magic. Plan your trip carefully, making sure to dress appropriately for the cold temperatures. In winter, the lake can freeze over, creating even more spectacular scenery. Take advantage of the tranquility and surreal beauty, perhaps by taking an ice walk or admiring the snowy panorama.
Practical tips:
📌 Check lake accessibility at https://www.prags.bz/en
📌 Monitor weather and road conditions, making sure you are prepared for cold temperatures.
📌 Equip your vehicle with winter tires and check the road conditions on the road leading to the lake.
📌 Consider arriving early to avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the snowy lake.
📌 Dress in layers to adapt to the changing weather conditions, and don't forget to bring sturdy snow boots to explore the lakeshore.
2. Lake Carezza: enchanted reflections
Lake Carezza, famous for its multicolored reflections, is transformed into a dreamscape under a blanket of snow. Explore the frozen lake and admire the majesty of the Cantinaccio peak in the background. Remember to check weather and road conditions before setting out.
Practical tips:
📌 Check the route and parking information.
📌 It is usually organized the Christmas market at Lake Carezza, which promises to be a magical experience. Unfortunately, it was not set up in 2023, but we hope it can be repeated in the coming years.
3. Christmas markets: tradition and festive atmosphere
After a day soaking in the beauty of the lakes, head to the Christmas markets. The magic of the holidays envelops the squares of picturesque Alpine villages. You will find stalls full of handicrafts, Christmas delicacies and the irresistible smell of mulled wine. Enjoy the cozy atmosphere and get carried away by the Christmas spirit.
Some of my favorites have been:
📍 Brunico
📍 Bressanone
📍 Bolzano
📍 Merano
📍 Moena
4. Relaxing spas: a weave of well-being
For a touch of relaxation and rejuvenation, consider a visit to the area spa. Soak in the warm, restorative waters after a day outdoors. This spa experience will add a note of wellness to your winter trip. There are many in the area. We took an afternoon access to the spa at the Smart Hotel Prinz Rudolf, which has a panoramic heated infinity pool, relaxation area and saunas.
Spa features of Smart Hotel Prinz Rudolf:
📌 We spent 30 € per person for the afternoon access (from 15:00 to 19:00).
📌 They provided us with a wellness bag with towels, bathrobes and slippers.
📌 It is just outside Merano, so this spa is great for relaxing a bit before or after visiting Merano and its Christmas markets.
In conclusion, a winter adventure among Lake Braies, Lake Carezza, Christmas markets and scenic spas is a gift for the eyes and spirit. Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of enchanted landscapes and festive traditions, experiencing a winter to remember in the hearts of the Dolomites.
